Georg Klotz circa 1790: fine violin from the Yehudi Menuhin collection
This fine master violin by Georg Klotz, also known as Georg Carl Klotz, is one of the finest works of this historic Mittenwald luthier we have ever seen at our workshop. It is an instrument which belonged to Yehudi Menuhin’s famous collection, a honour which indicates its historical and musical magnitude. A few years before his death, Georg Klotz captured the entirety of his personal style in this instrument, a style which follows in the footsteps of his father Sebastian Klotz and assumes a very unique position between the works of Stainer and Amati. With this violin, Georg Klotz clearly demonstrated that even in his seventies, he was very much still able to add innovative accents to the family violin model, a pattern which was not only influential but epoch-defining. Whereas the tenderly shaped sound holes lend the violin a Baroque spirit, the striking bee-sting corners were crafted with an obvious love of exquisite nuance, as is also evident in the broad purfling. The scroll is an expressive and masterful carving with mature and harmonious proportions, and the refined choice of premium tone woods reflect this as well. Under a golden-brown varnish, the finely-grained spruce of a quality that is rarely found and tightly flamed maple not only define the well-balanced aesthetic of this instrument, they also give it its outstanding tonal properties. The violin’s exceptionally good response allows musicians to play nuanced interpretations, and its lightness will intuitively lead them towards the fully realized strength, radiant heights, and warm depths of the clear, mature, precise voice of this instrument. It has been kept in excellent and practically crack-free condition. Its authenticity is confirmed by a certificate issued by the highly esteemed expert Hieronymus Köstler in Stuttgart.

English Baroque violin, 18th century
This recommended Baroque violin from 18th century England can be seen as a typical representation of a historic model, not despite its unusual silhouette but because of it. This interesting baroque violin harkens back to a time in which the standards in the field of violin making were more fluid and allowed room for luthiers to set individual stylistic accents. As a violin dating back to the late 18th century, it is a comparatively young exemplar of a period instrument, and its unknown English luthier patterned it after a delicate yet broad and uniquely proportioned model. The baroque violin's craftsmanship with the typical drawn purfling of 18th century English trade instruments demonstrates a simpler quality yet is rich in character; since it is in outstanding condition, the artisanry can still be seen in the overall construction. Both the upper block and the bass bar did not fall prey to later modernisation — as is the case with many other older instruments — which means that the baroque violin fully upholds the expectations created by its small and conspicuously baroque sound holes and confidently shaped historic scroll. The top of medium to wide-grained spruce features well-formed and soft fluting; it has as back and ribs no repairs, as is rarely seen for a well-played instrument of its age. The baroque violins voice is very strong for a Baroque violin and yet extremely warm. It is precise, resonant and full of power. A rare piece, the instrument has been preserved in nearly perfect condition and was meticulously set up in our restoration workshop. It is now ready to play after having been fitted with a high-quality Baroque bridge and catgut strings. This piece is affordable, in original condition and meets high musical standards.

Antique Klingenthal violin, approx. 1850
This antique violin that was built approx. 1850 is a characteristic example of 19th century instruments from the traditional violin making village of Klingenthal in Saxony. Even simpler violins that were crafted there in this period are famous for their beautiful sound. The glossy light-brown colored varnish is typical for this provenance, too, and determines the antique character of the quality tonewoods that were chosen for this instrument. Both the two-piece back and the ribs were crafted of beautiful, strongly flamed maple, and the top ist of excellent, medium grained spruce. The simple scroll is an expressive carving full of character, and it introduces the skilled hand of an experienced violin maker, just as the slim and elegantly cut soundholes. The most important feature of his work is, of course, the warm and mature, voluminous sound of this violin, that is preserved undamaged in very good condition. It was worked over completely in our atelier and is ready to play with a new ebony setup. The powerful sound is warm, dark, rich in volume and colors and mature in character - highly recommendable for demanding musicians.

7/8 - Italian 7/8 violin, Carlo Melloni, 1932 (certificate Eric Blot)
This petite Italian violin is a magnificent instrument for small handed players crafted in a typically Bolognese style, a tradition which is one of the more interesting movements in contemporary violin making history. Its maker, Carlo Melloni, was born in 1904 and left behind only a very small oeuvre. Little is known about his life and career other than the fact that he was an instructor of violin making at the Liuteria Italiana Luigi Mozzani from 1929 to 1933. Luigi Mozzani, who had gained fame as a virtuoso guitarist and composer, set up this school in an attempt to establish an experimental teaching workshop. His plans only succeeded for three years under the difficult conditions of the fascist dictatorship in power. The institute closing also apparently ended Carlo Melloni's career as a luthier, which makes this violin a historical rarity among modern instruments. At the same time, it provides an insight into a fascinating master. The excellent moderately-grained spruce of the top and the one-piece back of beautiful maple with gentle and flowing flames have a few charming irregularities which are typical of the distinctive aesthetic of premium Italian instruments. The attractive luminous orange-reddish oil varnish has been preserved in unusually good shape with very few traces of use. A small and solidly executed repair to the lower part of the back has no effect whatsoever on the excellent condition of this 7/8-sized violin. The instrument is an outstanding choice for demanding musicians with smaller hands. Its comfortable playing characteristics and its bright, timbre-rich sound with a slightly gentle character open up a broad range of musical interpretations.
